About ISP
The Iraqi Student Project (ISP) began as something practical, possible, and important that a small group of Americans could do as an act of reconciliation and promise to Iraqi citizens. ISP, incorporated in 2007 as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, seeks to make undergraduate education possible for qualified students who were studying in Iraq, were unable to continue their education because of the violence, and hope to someday return to help rebuild Iraq. From 2007 through 2012 a total of 62 ISP students were selected and prepared for study in the US without regard to gender, nationality, religion, or ethnicity.
The current situation in Syria has disrupted ISP's preparatory program in Damascus. However, during the years when ISP was able to operate inside of Syria, ISP secured enrollment for all 62 Iraqi students at US colleges and universities. In 2012 the program's first student earned his degree, from Canisius College. To date, 46 have now graduated. Many ISP students are continuing to receive support here in the US. Memphis' ISP student, Mustafa Hmood, is a member of the final class of ISP students, the Class of 2016, who began their college study in 2012. That year, Christian Brothers University in Memphis joined the ISP circle of colleges and universities. In keeping with the ISP model, Mustafa is surrounded by a small but committed Support Group of Memphians - native-born and foreign-born, Christian and non-Christian, young and old, Memphians from every walk of life. We welcome you to join us in this journey and to become acquainted with an exceptional young man who has become a leader, both in the classroom and around the campus of his university. |
